Case Study: Transloading & Final Mile Delivery

FMi Logistics partnered with Logic-ology to manage the full transload process for 16 x 40’ HC ocean containers of furnishings for the new Hampton Inn by Hilton Calgary Downtown, opening December 2025. 

The shipments arrived at the Port of Vancouver in three waves (8, 6, and 2 containers). Logic-ology coordinated all drayage to Stryder’s Vancouver flagship warehouse, where containers were destuffed, palletized, and reloaded into 53’ dry vans for final delivery to FMi’s Calgary facility. 

Logic-ology acted as the end-to-end coordinator, ensuring a smooth flow of freight from port arrival to final delivery.

Key responsibilities included: 

• Managing drayage within tight free-time windows to avoid demurrage
• Coordinating with our asset warehouse, overseeing warehouse operations including destuffing, palletizing, and cross-docking
• Scheduling and dispatching FTL dry vans for their final destination in Calgary
• Maintaining clear communication between the steamship line and port arrival, our warehouse, the carriers involved, and FMi

This structured, proactive approach ensured every stage stayed on schedule and aligned with the client’s expectations. 

Key Challenges 

• Multi partner, tight timeline coordination with high level communication needs: A project of this scale required careful coordination between multiple partners who provide different services.
• Floor-loaded furnishings: The increased manual handling of fragile inventory added complexity to the warehouse operations.  

Solutions Implemented 

To keep the project on track, Logic-ology introduced several process enhancements:

• Confirming detailed BOLs before each delivery
• Reinforcing delivery window commitments with carriers
• Adding communication checkpoints throughout the process to verify timeliness and required resources 

These measures improved workflow, ensured accuracy, and eliminated the ability for concerns to arise. 

Rather than relying on advanced automation, Logic-ology delivered success through operational discipline and clear communication.

Tools used included: 

• TruckMate, Macropoint, OpenDock, Excel, Outlook, and mobile communication
• Real-time photo documentation shared with FMi for transparency
• Visual and procedural tracking across drayage, warehouse, and delivery stages

This practical, communication-first approach ensured consistency and clarity throughout the project.
